The Associate of Science Degree (AS) in Criminal Justice program with an emphasis in corrections is to educate and prepare students for careers in correctional services by providing a strong foundation in criminal justice principles, rehabilitation strategies, and ethical correctional practices. The program emphasizes the importance of safety, security, human rights, and rehabilitation within correctional environments. Through academic rigor, students develop the knowledge, skills, and professionalism needed to contribute effectively to the correctional field and promote positive outcomes for individuals and communities.

Graduates from New River typically obtain employment or continue to a four-year school. We have articulation agreements with Bluefield State University, Glenville State University, West Virginia Institute of Technology, and West Virginia State University, which means that students may obtain their first two years of a four-year degree at New River CTC, then continue (transfer) to the four-year school for the final two years. This 2+2 approach to obtaining a 4-year degree is typically more cost-effective for students.
