The Paralegal Studies Associate of Applied Science degree at New River Community and Technical College prepares graduates to function as highly competent, ethically grounded paraprofessionals who exercise advanced legal analytical skills, substantive law knowledge, and independent judgment under attorney supervision. This program is committed to developing graduates who can meaningfully contribute to legal teams through sophisticated legal research, case analysis, drafting of complex legal documents, and effective client and courtroom support.
Distinct from the Legal Assisting program, the Paralegal Studies AAS emphasizes higher-level legal reasoning, deep substantive and procedural law competence, advanced research proficiency, and strong professional autonomy within the limits of law. Through rigorous coursework, experiential learning, and professional skill development, the program empowers students to become adaptable, justice-minded paralegal professionals who are prepared for employment in law firms, courts, corporate legal departments, public agencies, and nonprofit organizations, as well as for further legal or academic study
