The Associate of Applied Science Cosmetology program consists of 65 credit hours of instruction of both theoretical and practical skill development required for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. An additional 15 credit hours of General Studies must be completed for the A.A.S. Cosmetology program.
Cosmetology services include the cleaning, conditioning, shaping, reinforcing, coloring, and enhancing the body surface in the areas of the head, scalp, face, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Students must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Science courses provide a good background for the skills taught in hair analysis and treatment. Physical requirements include finger dexterity, a negative allergic reaction to cosmetic preparations, and artistic flair for creative design. The professional cosmetologist should enjoy working with the public and in a team atmosphere. People skills and time management skills are essential. Licensing or certification exams are independent of graduation requirements.
The West Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists requires 1800 hours of classroom instruction and clinical experience before application for licensure. Successful classroom theory precedes laboratory activities. Theory and practice are integrated throughout the program.
