How Do I Apply for Admission?
You may apply online at www.newriver.edu/ready-to-apply. Current high school students who would like to take courses can apply online at https://www.newrier.edu/early/ and use current high school student application. You also have the option to apply in person at any of our locations using the dedicated computers available on site.
Upon submitting your online Application for Admission, you will receive an email confirming its receipt. Next you will receive an email with your required admission checklist items to complete the admission process, along with reminders. Additional communication through the admission process may be by telephone, text and/or email. Please note that applications for the upcoming semester are prioritized and reviewed first. If you need to make changes to your application after submission, please do not re-apply, email admissions@newriver.edu.
Admissions checklist items are based upon your student type. Official final transcripts (if requested on your checklist notification) may be mailed directly from the school or agency to New River Community and Technical College Office of Admissions, 280 University Drive, Beaver, WV 25813. Electronic transcripts from the National Student Clearinghouse, Parchment or other digital transcript providers must be sent directly from the service to admissions@newriver.edu if you are asked to provide an address.
Please do not request transcripts before completing your Application for Admission or to be sent directly to you, as we will not accept them as official when forwarded. Official final transcripts may not be future dated for graduation ,”in progress” and must be final grades. Please view your college or high school’s website for transcript ordering instructions or call them to inquire. If you are picking up an official final transcript, it must remain in the school or Board of Education’s sealed envelope to be accepted.
Once your admission is complete, you will be assigned a Student Success Coach to assist you. You will receive an email and/or text with your coach’s contact information.
Important Application Information for all Students
- All material and documents submitted for your admission file become the property of New River Community and Technical College.
- Transcripts from other entities such as colleges and high schools will not be released to the student or to third parties.
- Admission requirements must be satisfied in order to complete your admission file and in order to receive financial aid/loans if applicable.
- Your former name must be listed on the Application for Admission. If you attended a high school or college under a previous name, it must be listed in order for the Office of Admissions to match and process receipt of the document transcript.
- You must list all former colleges and/or universities attended on the Application for Admission. A student who fails to acknowledge attendance or registration at any post-secondary institution is subject to immediate dismissal or repayment of financial aid/loans.
- If you choose to submit placement test scores such as ACT, SAT or New River CTC’s Accuplacer they must be taken within 5 years from the date of current admission to be accepted. Test scores or placement testing are optional, but failing to provide will place you into enhanced courses.
- It is your responsibility to provide accurate information on the Application for Admission. Incorrect information will stop or delay the application process and/or financial aid process. Review your application for accuracy prior to submission.
What Type of Student Are You?
The documentation required for admission varies by student type. Please review the following descriptions of student types to determine the documentation we require for your admission. Changes may not be made to your student type after classes begin.
First-Time Freshman Student
If you are applying to New River CTC for the first time (even if you took college classes while in high school,) have not attended another college as a regular student, and have a high school diploma, or high school equivalency, we consider you a first-time freshman.
Transfer Student
If you have earned a high school diploma, or high school equivalency and have taken a college course or courses (excluding while in high school), we consider you a transfer student.
A first-time freshman or a transfer student must submit the following material for admission:
- An application for Admission
- Final official transcripts (high school and or college) excluding New River CTC must be official (issued from the school and sent directly by them or from electronic service to New River CTC’s Office of Admissions.) admission@newriver.edu. Check you high school’s website or college’s website for “Transcript Request” information to guide you on their process of ordering your official transcripts or call your school. if you choose to hand deliver transcripts, they must remain in the school’s or Board of Education school’s stamped sealed envelope.
IMPORTANT: You must list each college or university attended, including those in which you withdrew from courses if a transcript was created, or college courses taken while in high school. Contact your school’s Registrar’s Office if you are uncertain if a transcript was created.
In lieu of an official high school transcript, you may also submit General Education Development (GED) test scores or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) test scores or HiSet test scores by ordering through www.diplomasender.com. Contact your high school equivalency testing center if they are not listed or you have questions.
Test Score Requirements or Options for Registration
If you have not taken college level English and/or Math:
- Submit ACT or SAT scores (dated within 5 years from the date of Application for Admission) If no ACT or SAT scores, see additional options below accepted.
- Graduated high school within the last 5 years with a cumulative GPA of 2.6 or higher (on a unweighted 4.0 scale) with a C or better in 4 years of English for placement into college-level math;
- Accuplacer placement testing through New River CTC if a student does not meet any of the criteria listed above and has not taken college level English or Math.
The Accuplacer test may be scheduled through your assigned Student Success Coach once admission is complete. You will need your student identification number.
Returning (Readmitted) Student
If you have previously registered for classes at New River CTC or withdrawn from classes and have not attended another college in your absence, we consider you a returning, readmitted student.
You must submit the following material to be readmitted:
- An updated Application for Admission.
- Any outstanding documents requested for your admission file.
Transient Student
If you are currently attending another college or university but wish to take a course at New River CTC and transfer credit back to your home college or university, we consider you a transient student.
You must submit the following material before registering for classes:
- An Application for Admission form each semester.
- A transient form (course permission/visiting student) each semester completed by your current college or university, signed by your institution’s Registrar along with other required signatures. Your college or university should send completed/approved permission forms to admissions@newriver.edu. If you wish, you may provide the completed form as well.
After completing your coursework each semester, you must request an official transcript through New River CTC’s Registrar’s Office to transfer your course(s) back to your home institution.
High School Student Taking College Courses
If you are currently a high school student and would like to take a course with New River CTC, we consider you a provisional student.
To be eligible to enroll in college classes at New River CTC as a high school student, you must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a junior or senior. (Sophomores may be eligible if participating in the Grow Your Own (GYO) Pathway through their high school. Your high school will provide guidance if you are in a GYO pathway).
- Have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher. Your school may require a higher GPA.
- Complete the online Current High School Student Application each semester you will attend. Visit: https://www.newriver.edu/early/.
- Next, complete the course registration form each semester you will attend. If you are home-schooled, your parent of the person overseeing your educational instruction will sign as the Principal
- Provide ACT or SAT scores, if you plan to enroll in Math, English and other courses with pre-requisites.
OR
In lieu of ACT or SAT Scores, a student who has successfully completed 2 years of math and English with a C or better and as a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher may be eligible. Your high school must submit an unofficial transcript directly to New River CTC’s Office of Admissions, admissions@newriver.edu, by fax, (304) 929-6719 or you may order through their electronic service to be sent to New River CTC.
OR
Accuplacer placement testing through New River CTC if a student does not meet any of the criteria listed above. Dual credit student testing will be arranged through your high school on site. Early enrollment students may schedule to take and Accuplacer if needed. Contact your Student Success Coach.
Placement tests (if necessary) must be taken prior to the start of class and before registration. Course and prerequisite information can be found in the college catalog under Course Descriptions.
Admission and registration will take place on site at the high school for college courses offered within the high school for dual credit. If you plan to take a course at the high school, you may register for the college course offered on site and courses offered on campus/online at the same time.
Special (Non-Degree or Certificate Seeking) Student
If you wish to take college credit courses for personal enrichment, job improvement or if you are seeking an Advanced Skill Set Certificate (ASSC), you may enroll as a special (non-degree or certificate seeking) student. A special student is not pursuing a Certificate of Applied Science (CAS), Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science Degree. As a special student you may take any course offered for which you qualify. Your work as a special student will be evaluated by the Registrar at the end of each semester to determine whether your academic performance indicates an ability to continue your studies. You must meet with an academic advisor after you have completed 15 credit hours of coursework to discuss program and curriculum objectives.
As a Special student, you must submit the following for admission:
- An Application for Admission each semester you will attend
Depending upon the course or courses you wish to register for, you may be asked to provide documentation showing you have met course prerequisites (if applicable).
Only select Advanced Skill Set Certificates (A.S.S.C) may qualify for state or federal financial aid. You must reapply for admission each semester you will attend. If you wish to change your status to Certificate (C.A.S) or degree seeking the following semester, you will need to reapply for admissions changing your student type.
International Student
New River CTC is not certified to enroll international students at this time. You must be a U.S. citizen or have a permanent residency status (green card) in order to enroll at New River CTC. For information on permanent residency, visit www.uscis.gov/greencard.
College Orientation
The objective of orientation at New River Community and Technical College is to provide information on academic policies, Student Services and student rights and responsibilities, as well as to advise students of behaviors and activities known to promote success.
