Alternate Ways to Earn College Credit

Dual Enrollment Credit

If you took college courses while you were in high school, you may have credits that you can transfer to New River CTC.

To have these credits evaluated you will need to request an official transcript from the institution that awarded the credit.

  • Request that the transcript be sent from the college directly to admissions, admissions@newriver.edu.
  • If you have coursework that was taken through New River CTC, let your campus Student Success Coach or advisor know when scheduling.

Transfer Credit

If you are a student who is transferring credit from another college to New River CTC:

  • Have official transcripts for all college-level work attempted submitted directly to New River Community and Technical College’s Office of Admissions admissions@newriver.edu. The transcripts should be mailed directly to New River CTC by the issuing institution.
  • College-level course credits earned at regionally accredited post-secondary institutions can be transferred to New River CTC.
  • An evaluation of transfer credit will be completed by the Registrar’s Office after your admission file is complete to determine which courses will apply toward your degree program and which can be counted as elective credit.
  • Students may appeal a transfer credit decision and should consult with their advisor or department chair, program director, or dean if they disagree with how a course transferred onto their New River CTC transcript.

Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) refers to a range of methods used to grant credit for college-level learning earned through experience outside of the academic classroom. Students may be required to submit the information in a portfolio format or by presenting documentation of the prior learning such as a copy of a certification. Portfolio evaluation fees or a posting fee may be required prior to the evaluation or posting of credit. Students may obtain at http://www.newriver.edu/student-forms/ from our website and may speak to their advisor for guidance.

Military/Veteran Services

New River Community and Technical College welcomes Military/Veteran students and can provide services to assist Veterans and dependents with college from the enrollment process to applying for VA Educational Benefits and graduation. College credit may be awarded for experience in the military. You may contact the Veteran Certifying Official at (304)647-6566 or find more information on the Veterans Benefits page on the College website.

New River Community and Technical College may grant a maximum of two (2) credit hours of physical activity credit and two (2) credit hours of safety and first aid credit if you present evidence of having completed military basic training. You must provide a copy of your DD214 to the Veteran Certifying Official. https://www.newriver.edu/veterans-benefits/. Additional credit may be awarded after evaluation of Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) and other training in accordance with ACE guidelines. A transcript for Army, Navy or Marines should be sent to the Veteran Certifying Official.

You must provide a transcript from the Community College of the Air Force or Joint Services Transcript if you are applying for and using VA Educational Benefits while enrolled at New River Community and Technical College. VA requires a review of those transcripts for potential credit toward the certificate or degree you are pursuing at New River Community and Technical College. See Veterans Benefits on the College webpage for additional requirements if you are planning to use VA Educational Benefits at New River Community and Technical College.

While payment is pending from the VA for Chapter 33 or Chapter 31 students, New River Community and Technical College will not prevent enrollment, assess a late fee, require alternative or additional funding, or deny access to any college resources available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution.

However, to qualify for this provision, you are required to: produce the VA Certificate of Eligibility to the VA School Certifying Official prior to the first day of class, complete the Veteran Certification of Enrollment Form requesting certification of their enrollment with VA and any other additional information needed to properly certify enrollment as described in other institutional policies.
