Disability Services

Students with special needs are encouraged to contact the Director of Student Services before the start of the semester to request accommodation. If you have documented disabilities, you are eligible for ADA accommodations if they meet the conditions of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. You must self-identify and provide appropriate written documentation of your disability. The information provided is treated as confidential and is not released to anyone without your prior consent. If you qualify for services, you should work closely with the ADA Coordinator. Reasonable modifications in policies, practices, and procedures are implemented to assure equal access to individuals with disabilities. The ADA Coordinator will prepare the “Notification of Need for Accommodation” letters for the faculty. The student is required to give their faculty the letter and discuss the accommodation approved. College Portal

The New River CTC portal is a single sign-on access point for New River Community and Technical College online resources. Services available through the portal include:

  1. Email-using Outlook Web Access, email is the College’s official method for electronic communication.
  2. Self-Service Banner-provides access to course schedules, financial aid, unofficial transcripts, grades, and your official address and phone information.
  3. Brightspace-this Learning Management System (LMS) is where online course content is available and if you take an online class, you will find assignments, assessments, your syllabus, and other course information as well as communication tools.
4. Zoom-is an audio and video conferencing solution that includes chat, whiteboard, and screen sharing options. The client is a free download (for computers and mobile devices) and some courses rely heavily on Zoom for communication and to deliver course information.
  5. Regroup-is a mass notification system used for both emergencies and non-emergencies to send text messages to cell phones and to email inboxes. Users must input cell numbers and personal email accounts to receive notifications more quickly than relying on New River email inboxes.
  6. LinkedIn Learning-is an online repository of training information that can be used within courses or as a “just in time” learning tool for all students and employees.
  7. Bookstore-the online bookstore is available to purchase all required materials for courses (payment can be made with a credit card, PayPal, or with financial aid vouchers).

Information Technology Services

There are also links in the portal to the Help Desk, Library Services, and People Search (the College’s online directory). As a new user, when you first access the portal, you must provide responses to a few questions to confirm your identity and then create a One Time Passcode (sent to your cell or personal email) to complete the creation of your account. More information about how to access and use these services is available in the online orientation and from our Information Technology Services website.

All students are expected to monitor their New River email account for important information from College instructors and staff. The College’s email system is the official method of communication among students and employees. All students are encouraged to register your cell phone in Regroup so you can receive text-based emergency alert messages that may be about class cancellations or emergency issues on your campus. You can add your cell phone and personal email account information to your Regroup profile through the portal (see this page for more information). For assistance, please contact the Information Technology Help Desk at (304) 929-6725 or itsupport@newriver.edu.
