Sexual Harassment

Drug-Free Workplace, Drug-Free Schools, and Communities
In accordance with the provisions of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989, New River Community and Technical College has implemented a policy on the illegal use of drugs/alcohol in the workplace. Students seeking help or advice should contact the Student Services for more information. New River Community and Technical College recognizes the importance of a safe and healthy environment. Any employee or student violating this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act requires institutions of higher education to establish written policies and guidelines governing the review, inspection, release, amendment, and maintenance of student educational records. New River Community and Technical College has established policies and guidelines to ensure that the educational records of its students are treated responsibly in accordance with the Act and U.S. Department of Education regulations. These policies and guidelines may be obtained from the Registrar’s Office. You may file complaints concerning alleged failures by the College to comply with the Act or regulations promulgated there under with the U.S. Department of Education Family Policy Compliance Office 400 Maryland Ave, SW Washington, DC 20202-8520.
You have the right to inspect your personal educational records. All educational records are maintained in the Office of the Registrar. You may have copies of your personal educational records from the College with payment of appropriate fees. New River CTC will not provide you with copies of your records submitted from other schools or businesses.
If you believe personal education records contain inaccurate or misleading information or violate privacy or other rights, you may submit a written appeal to the Registrar seeking to amend them. Within 20 days after receipt of the appeal, the Registrar will issue a decision regarding the appeal. If the decision is to refuse to amend your educational records, you may file a written request for a hearing. You will be provided with a full and fair opportunity to present evidence. A final written decision will be rendered based upon the evidence submitted at the hearing.
Right to Privacy
“Educational institutions shall not release personal information on a student except on the condition that the party to which the information is being transferred will not permit any other party to have access to such information without the written consent of the parents or of the eligible student.” Section 438(b) of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (the Buckley Amendment). A complete statement of your rights and the institutional policy on directory information are listed with the schedule on the college website each term. The complete Student Records Policies and Procedures for New River Community and Technical College is found in the New River Community and Technical College Policy Manual and students may obtain a copy from the Registrar’s Office.
Student Right-To-Know Act
Section 103 of the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990 as amended by the Higher Education Technical Amendments of 1991 requires public disclosure of relevant graduation rate information for students enrolled in colleges and universities receiving federal financial assistance. New River Community and Technical College makes available to currently enrolled as well as prospective students, the graduation rate for the most recent cohort of entering students that have had an opportunity to complete or graduate from their respective programs in the specified completion period. This information is available in the Registrar’s Office. Historical graduation and persistence rate information can also be found on the New River CTC website www.newriver.edu.
Compliance with Military Selective Service Act
State law provides that a male person who has attained the age of eighteen (18) years may not enroll in a state-supported institution of postsecondary education unless he is in compliance with the Military Selective Service Act (50 U.S. Code, Appendix §451, et seq. and the amendments thereto). Also, a male person may not receive a loan, grant, scholarship or other financial assistance for postsecondary higher education funded by state revenue, including federal funds or gifts and grants accepted by this state or receive a student loan guaranteed by the State unless he is in compliance with the Military Selective Service Act. Selective Service Act registration information should be available at all U.S. Postal Service facilities and may be available at some high schools.
