Registration for New and Readmitted Students
You will be notified by email and/or text when New Student Registration begins. You will be contacted by your Student Success Coach for your initial advising and registration appointment unless you are interested in and pursuing a select admission program. You are encouraged to complete your admission in order to register as soon as possible. Doing so helps ensure that you can register for all of the classes you need to take and that fit your schedule. If you are Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) or degree seeking student, financial aid/loans will not be dispersed unless your admission to the college is complete (fully admitted).
IMPORTANT ADVISING INFORMATION
The initial advising appointment for new students (First-time freshman, Transfer, Transient, Special, or high school students) occurs with your assigned Student Success Coach unless you are pursuing a select admission program such as LPN (Practical Nursing), Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), Physical Therapy Assistant, Emergency Service Technology (EMS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Surgical Technician (SURG). If you are pursuing a select admission program, you will be referred to the select admit program’s faculty advisor to complete registration once your general admission is complete.
Registration for Continuing (Currently Enrolled) Students
If you are a continuing student, you are encouraged to register during Current Student Priority Registration before you leave for the semester. The last date to register and other important dates are published on the Academic Calendar https://www.newriver.edu/academic-calendar/ on the College website each semester. An advisor’s approval is required on all registration forms.
You have been assigned an academic advisor that you should connect with early and often. If you are a continuing student and register during the summer months or holiday breaks, your faculty advisor may not be readily available, however you will be notified of alternative options by email.
Which Classes Should I Take?
Program Evaluation Sheets
The program evaluation sheet will show you exactly which courses you need to graduate and the suggested order to take them. You may get a program evaluation sheet from your advisor or by going to the Degree and Certificate Programs page on our website and choosing the sheet from the academic year in which you started or changed your major.
DegreeWorks
DegreeWorks/Dashboard is a web-based application that provides you and your academic advisor with information to help you focus on your academic goals by tracking your progress toward a degree. You may access DegreeWorks/Dashboard through the myNewRiver portal to access an electronic audit of your progress toward a specific degree.
- Courses and credit hours earned as applied toward your degree program
- Catalog requirements in effect when you choose a major
- All requirements necessary to receive a specific degree
- Transfer credits used to satisfy degree requirements
- Courses for which you are currently registered
- Courses that do not apply to specific degree requirements, but do apply toward overall earned hours and cumulative GPA
Pre-requisite and Co-requisite Courses
Pre-requisite or Co-requisite courses are listed in the Course Descriptions of this catalog. It is your responsibility to have successfully completed pre-requisite courses and to be enrolled in co-requisite courses when enrolling for any course. Exceptions to this rule may be made only with the approval of the course instructor and the Dean. A failure to comply with the requirements of pre-requisite or co-requsite courses as listed in the Catalog without an approved exception will result in withdrawal from the course.
Placement Testing
The English and mathematics courses you will take during your first semester will be determined using your ACT, SAT New River CTC Accuplacer placement test scores or by Multiple Measures (if you qualify). Or you may opt-out of testing and will be placed into English and/or math enhanced courses.
Placement tests must have been taken within the past five years from current admission to be used. Your Student Success Coach, advisor and/or other College professional will help you interpret your test scores using the placement test score chart.
If you need to take the Accuplacer there is no fee for the 1st test. With prior approval, an additional test may be taken for $10.
Accuplacer Test
This online test consists of sections in math, writing and reading. Your Student Success Coach can arrange for you to take the Accuplacer test if you did not meet other criteria in order to register for classes. You will need to provide your Student ID number prior to testing and a valid form of ID. High school students may be tested prior to an assignment of an ID number.

Account Placed on Hold to Prevent Future Registration
You will not be permitted to register for classes, change your schedule or obtain an official transcript if you have a hold placed on your account for any reason. Reasons for having a hold placed on your records include, but are not limited to: having an incomplete admission file, owing a financial obligation to the college, having incorrect contact information, overdue library materials and financial aid Exit Counseling.
Changing Your Class Schedule
If you are considering changing your class schedule, you are urged to discuss your situation with your academic advisor. You must have your form signed by either your academic advisor or a Student Success Coach before your change can be processed. See below for specific guidelines and requirements for schedule changes.
Adding and Dropping Courses
Adding and dropping courses must be done before the add/drop deadline published in the academic calendar using an add/drop form. After the add/drop deadline, students are only permitted to withdraw from the course with a “W” grade using a Request for Withdrawal form following the steps listed below.
Withdrawing from Courses
If you register for a course and decide not to take it, you are responsible for withdrawing from the course. Students may not withdraw from courses after the deadline. The last day to withdraw with a “W” is posted on the academic calendar. The advisor’s signature is required to withdraw from a course. After obtaining the appropriate signatures, you must submit the withdrawal form to the Registrar’s office for processing which is located on the Beaver Campus. Withdrawing from some, but not all classes will not cause a refund of any tuition or fees.
Administrative Withdrawal
When a faculty member reports a student to be excessively absent (2 consecutive weeks with no communication) in his or her courses, the student will be reported to the Registrar’s Office. This should occur only after the faculty member has attempted to intervene with and help the student. Withdrawals due to excessive absences or never attending will be initiated by the college and processed in accordance with Federal and State Regulations. A student may be reinstated if the faculty member and student have agreed on what the student will have to do to successfully complete the course. Reinstatement must occur within 2 weeks of the withdrawal date.
Complete Withdrawal from All Courses
If you are considering withdrawing from the College, you are urged to discuss your situation with your advisor, your instructors and your Student Success Coach, the Dean, or other representatives of the College before making the decision. Early action leads to better informed, less stressful decisions.
Official withdrawal requires that you complete and sign the Request for Withdrawal form and obtain signatures from your advisor or your Student Success Coach and the Financial Aid Office. The completed form is sent to the Registrar’s Office for processing. You should ask for a copy for your records prior to leaving the form at the College.
Deadlines for Withdrawal
It is the responsibility of the student to adhere to deadlines and to ensure that withdrawing from a class or classes is done prior to the deadline. Deadlines are posted on the college website (link calendars). Late withdrawals are reserved for extraordinary situations. Regardless of circumstances, late withdrawal petitions are not guaranteed to be approved. An approval of a late withdrawal will not cause a refund of any tuition or fees. Withdrawing from courses after the deadline for withdrawing will be approved only through action by the Dean or the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Students requesting a withdrawal after the deadline must submit a Request for Withdrawal Form and an explanation and documentation of why the deadline was missed.
Military Withdrawals
New River Community and Technical College will assist enrolled students who are called to active duty in a national or international crisis and who present a copy of his or her call-up orders. Students who are unexpectedly called to duty have several options available to them, as outlined in the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission Series 56 Military Student Withdrawal Policy. Contact Veteran’s Services for more information, 304-647-6566, dlewis@newriver.edu.
Taking Courses at Another Institution (Transient Classes)
If you wish to take courses at another institution while you are enrolled at New River CTC as your home school, you must apply for permission to do so by completing a Transient Permission Form with your advisor. These forms are available on our website, or at the Registrar’s Office at the Raleigh County Campus. Forms\RForm_Transient.pdf
A Transient Permission Form must be approved and signed by your Advisor, the Dean and the Registrar. Approval to take courses on a transient basis is not automatic and is subject to official College policies and practices. Once a transient permission form is approved, the student is notified by email and a copy of the form is sent to the other institution. Being approved for a transient course guarantee transfer of the credit(s) back to New River CTC. When selecting classes to take as a transient student, students are encouraged to review the course description of both the transient class and the New River CTC class to make sure they are similar.
Responsibilities While Taking Transient Classes
If you are approved for a transient course and decide not to take the course or to drop/withdraw from the course, please immediately notify the New River CTC’s Registrar’s Office in writing or by email registrar@newriver.edu. Please note that dropping or withdrawing from an approved transient course may negatively affect your financial aid status.
Before the term begins, students taking courses at another institution are responsible for contacting the institution they intend to visit to apply as a transient student, registering for the course(s), and for making payment arrangements with the other school.
At the conclusion of the term, it is the student’s responsibility to send an official transcript to the New River Community and Technical College Registrar’s office within thirty days of the end of the semester. If the transcript is not received by the deadline, a hold will be placed on your student records, which will prevent registration in future terms.
