The Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) in Massage Therapy will exceed the 500 clock hours required by the West Virginia Massage Therapy Licensure Board. Upon completion of the Massage Therapy program, the student will be eligible to sit for the examination administered by the West Virginia State Board or the National Licensure board provided all eligibility requirements are met. Licensing or certification exams are independent of graduation requirements.

Massage Therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. There are dozens of types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities).

People seek massage therapy for a variety of reasons - to reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles, rehabilitate injuries, reduce pain, and promote overall health and wellness. At New River Community and Technical College, you will be studying to be a professional who provides this service. Employment of professional massage therapists is expanding. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 23% growth in massage therapy employment between 2012 and 2022 - faster than the average rate for all occupations. Research estimates that massage therapy was an $11.7 billion industry in the U.S. in 2014.

Students enrolling in this program are subject to background and/or drug screening. See New River Community and Technical College Procedure 41 and 44 at http://www.newriver.edu/www.newriver.edu under Faculty and Staff - Human Resources - New River Procedures for more information.

New River CTC is a National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) assigned school.
